How long do think someone should train before they should compete?

Wes, This totally depends on how fast of a learner they are. Some students can compete within 3 months others take longer. Sparring is your grade card. Depending how you look in competitive sparring determines as soon you can fight or what needs work before you do so.

mastering the basics and displaying them precedes sparring.

I started training a month ago for white collar boxing in the uk (for people who'd like to get into boxing). I am 38 and in ok shape (215lb with some fat to lose and ok fitness level) with a fight on 12th March 2011. I am training with a boxing club twice a week (general fitness and sparring) but need guidance on diet and a training programme for the rest of the week to lead me up to 12th March. Also, last 2 times I've sparred my nose has bled profusely and I#d like to know if anyone would recommend cauterisation or anything else?? Many thanks for any help you can give me.
